Hurricane Matthew in the Dominican Republic
On October 05, 2016, the International Charter 'Space and Major Disasters' was activated for floods and landslides in the Dominican Republic caused by Hurricane Matthew. The DLR/ZKI is responsible for the Project Management of this Charter Call and supports the ‘National Emergency Commission’ of the Dominican Republic with the provision of satellite data and value added disaster information products.
The tropical storm passed over the country on October 04, 2016 and brought heavy rain and powerful winds which have caused damage and floods. After leaving the Dominican Republic, the storm moved north where it also affected part of Cuba's eastern coast. Matthew has affected 16 countries in the Caribbean so far, and caused major damage and fatalities in neighbouring Haiti.
